Trent Green Golf Classic

The Mercedes-Benz Dealers of Kansas City were proud to sponsor this month The Trent Green Golf Classic, an annual charity tournament benefitting The Ronald McDonald house charities.

This year's tournament was held at Shoal Creek Golf Club, a beautiful course in North Kansas City. Nearly half a million dollars was raised through the event for the charity.

Additionally J.C. DeLeon, from Prairie Village, and Steve Muller, from Leawood, were the lowest net and lowest gross scorers at the tournament. As part of the Mercedes-Benz Dealer championship, the two qualified to go to Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii for the Mercedes-Benz Western Sectional.

Wine, Wings, and Wheels

This year Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City was glad to be party of Wine, Wings, and Wheels, a collector car show and new model viewing event for owners of Cessna private aircraft.

Held at Johnson County Executive Airport, a half dozen of Cessna's newest planes were mixed in with some very interesting classic and exotic cars as owners were able to view both.

What hangar party would be complete without an automobile that looks like it belongs in one: The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. We swung our modern gullwing by and enjoyed the sites and sounds while dreaming we might someday have our own plane.

Art of the Car Concours

For another year we had the opportunity to participate in The Art of the Car Concours, the largest classic car show in Kansas City, benefitting The Kansas City Art Institute.

Despite temperatures approaching 100 degrees, hundreds of visitors came to the Art Institute's campus on Sunday to view over 200 classic vehicles. Everything from classic American muscle to hundred year old cars were in attendance as well as several winners of the famous Palm Beach Concours D'Elegance.

We look forward to participating in the great event next year!

Mercedes-Benz MPG Challenge Recap

Fuel costs are a constant topic in today’s media, with consumers making being more conscious about fuel efficiency than ever before. The 2012 model year also marks the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz C250, the most fuel efficient Mercedes-Benz vehicle ever sold in the United States, making 31 mpg highway (estimated). In addition to purchasing a more fuel efficient car, driving style can significantly affect fuel consumption. To highlight the fuel efficiency of the new C250 as well as how driving can impact performance, we held The Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City MPG Challenge, a one lap race of the 435 highway loop around Kansas City, where the team with the highest MPG average would win.

To promote this event we chose to team up with 810 WHB, the most listened-to radio station in the Kansas City area. Two of their top hosts, Todd Leabo and Frank Boal, volunteered to ride along in the vehicles and provide commentary during the event on 810’s afternoon radio show, which is also the most listened-to show in Kansas City.

We picked 2 fans online to drive the vehicles for the event, with a challenge issued via Twitter. Prospective competitors were asked to tweet us using the #MBKCMPG hashtag and tell us the strategy they would use to win the event. We leveraged our Facebook community of over 2,000 fans and our YouTube channel to promote the contest. After a week, we selected two of the most vocal entrants to drive the vehicles. The winning driver would receive a $200 gas card courtesy of BP, and the loser would still get $100.

In addition to the contestants, each vehicle represented a local charity, with Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City partner Sleepyhead Beds and 810 Radio’s 810 Cares for KC sponsoring a car. $200 was donated to the winning charity and $100 was donated to the losing charity.

Leading up to the day of the event, smack talk ensued between the radio hosts on-air and online as well as between the two contestants. We gave information on the Mercedes-Benz C250 to the teams via YouTube video, and used our own social media platforms to build excitement about the competitions.

The day of the event both teams met at Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City, where two fueled C250s waited for them. The vehicles were equipped with tracking units courtesy of our partners at Garmin, a global leader in GPS devices based in Kansas City. This allowed us to monitor team progress, make sure no one stopped for gas, and ensured that posted speed limits were obeyed throughout the event.

The teams took off and completed the 91 mile lap of the 435 loop in just less than two hours, giving updates to the radio audience by phone-in and to the online audience via Twitter. The winning team arrived 15 minutes ahead of the losing team, and averaged 37.9 mpg for the race, with the runner up averaging 36.8 mpg. The results were updated online and on the radio, settling some intense smack talk and highlighting the fuel efficiency of the new Mercedes-Benz C250.

The radio station has an estimated 50,000 daily listeners who heard the event mentioned 30 times in the week leading up to it. During the event itself, the teams called in 6 separate times to the radio station while on the air.

On Twitter, there were over 150 tweets that included the event hashtag, which reached over 16,000 different accounts, and had a total of over 81,000 impressions.

Customer One

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of last week the entire Mercedes-Benz staff here at Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City flew to Denver, CO for a new Mercedes-Benz customer service initiative titled Customer One. This interactive program was geared towards improving every step of your experience while buying a Mercedes-Benz.

A major highlight of the event was a focus on Mercedes-Benz heritage. Known as the brand that invented the car, Carl Benz filed the patent for an automobile 125 years ago. Since then Mercedes-Benz has been the global innovator in automobiles creating everything from ABS brakes to Traction Control, to the more recent innovations of PRE-SAFE and Attention Assist. In fact, Mercedes-Benz has filed 80,000 patents since it began in 1886. That’s 2 per day for the last 125 years!

In addition to covering the rich history behind Mercedes-Benz, we explored stories of how other luxury retailers delight their customers. Using examples from Nordstrom, Mont Blanc, and others, we came up with new ways to make the customer experience a special time for everyone that walks in our door.

Here at Mercedes-Benz of Kansas City we have always prided ourselves on the highest level of customer service, but like Mercedes-Benz, we can never stop innovating. That’s why we make the same promise to you that Carl Benz made over a century ago: The Best or Nothing

Spotlight: Aretha Franklin at The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Lately there has been an electricity surrounding Kansas City. From Sporting Kansas City, a top-ranking MLS team with a spectacular new facility, to Google Fiber, an announcement that Kansas City would receive the most advanced information infrastructure in the world, KC has been in the news as the "Paris of the Plains".

Another important recent landmark for the Kansas City area is undoubtedly The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, a new iconic structure downtown designed to house the premier concerts and performances of our time.

Last night was no exception, with legend Aretha Franklin performing to a sold-out crowd in The Muriel Kauffman Theater portion of the center. She delighted the audience for over 90 minutes with classic hits and newer adaptations.

The Mercedes-Benz dealers of Kansas City were proud to be the exclusive sponsor for this event, recognizing the importance of the arts and The Kauffman Center to the Kansas City community. "The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and Mercedes-Benz are both synonymous with excellence in the Kansas City community," said Robert Hellweg, Marketing Manager for the Mercedes-Benz Dealers of Kansas City.
